“The user is not a farm administrator” : Configuring PowerPivot for SQL 2012 RC0

Configuring PowerPivot for SQL Server 2012 is a little different.  You now get a Configuration Tool for PowerPivot, rather like you get a Configuration Tool for Reporting Services.  The configuration tool can be reached from the Windows Start Menu as can be seen in Figure 1:

PowerPivot 2012 Configuration Wizard

Figure 1 : PowerPivot 2012 Configuration Wizard

You get asked to Configure or Repair PowerPivot for SharePoint next, but the validation doesn’t seem to pick up the fact that you are a Farm Administrator unless you are logged in as the account with which you actually installed and created the Central Administration of your SharePoint Farm.   So you get faced with the following dialog whether you are a Farm Admin or not …

User is not a Farm Administrator

Figure 2 : "User is not a Farm Administrator"

You can be God Admin on every box on the Internet and it won’t make any difference …  You’ll just have to log back in as the installation account and then try again.  You should see the following colorful “Eaxmining your system.” dialog:

in which case you should be in business.

Good luck.

Cheers

  1. Wolfgang Grinfeld says:

“… User is not a Farm admin ….” : Alternatively, change the primary administrator of the Central Admin Site collection

  2. Sunny Singh says:

Yes. I struggled with this too, setting the setup account as primary administrator of the Central Admin site works the trick.

  3. Nauman says:

yup it works for me too.

  4. Eric Fang says:

    Nice post!

I think just need to add the current user account to CA site collection administrators user group.

  5. Kuifie says:

Thank you for the above. The more I use SharePoint (Scare Point), the more I realised that it is too complex for Microsoft to handle. There are so much wonderful features but it is overly complex to get everthing to work.

  6. Mohammed says:

yup…changed primary admin account and it worked! thanks.
